Doodle

Doodling while watching a Witcher 1 Let’s Play on youtube…. So that I know whats going on when I try and play Witcher 2 then get the the recent game. I tried to play the first Witcher and got sooo angry with it I decided just to watch it. So yeah this sketch was inspired by Raymond’s hat in that game…. but I was trying to mimic the style of FF9(My favorite FF game!)…. I really wish I could play that on PC.
But yeah anyway maybe I will paint this in full.

Some Fallout 3 fanart

The wait is almost over for Fallout 4. So Excited. So here is a little fanart I have done in anticipation.
This is how I rolled in Fallout 3 if I wasn’t going it solo.
I was always soooo happy to find the Enclave so I could loot their rifles… then was so disappointed when they all had pistols
Based off the Full Metal Bitch poster from Edge of Tomorrow… Something else I really love.

Still life again

Trying to get back into the swing of things after a few set backs. I’ll post the next few still life paints as a group post after I do them, but this one is a few weeks old.

Pop-A-Wheelie hats

Hey! These are super old, but almost two years ago I did hat designs for what was to be an android game called Pop-A-Wheelie.
I was on it for a short time doing environment prop and hat designs. Back then it was a pretty different game when I was on it and after a lot of change its finally out and you can play it here on WebGL http://www.y8.com/games/pop_a_wheelie_webgl

Labyrinth character

First time painting a character with an AO painting method. I think it works nicely, at least for a first attempt.
So yeah this is the girl from my Labyrinth project…. I’m still working on her design, but I had this lineart and really wanted to try the method.
Looking at these piece now there are some things I would do differently next time. So any critiques for when I fix up this piece or for next time I use this method on one of my other characters you may have please either send me a message via tumblr or email me at kim.stramat@gmail.com I really appreciate them. There’s always room for improvement.

Grayscale Still life paints 3-5

My hand has hurt pretty bad the last two days, so two of these I just did really loose and just straight value studies…. I had forgotten how much pain my hand can get while I paint with the tablet….

Still life painting 01+2

I got a Schoolism subscription this week.
This is one of my still life paint(only the digital one) from yesterday… The other one was wonky… I am using my tablet to do these and I haven’t used it in months so it takes some getting used to. My working set up doesn’t let me use my Cintiq for real life painting even simple still life paintings.

Sketchbook pages.

Sketchbook pages.
After some big professional/artistic disappointments last week I switched over to traditional working in hope to improve more. So for the past few day I have only been doing traditional still life studies in Acrylic/Gouache paintings. So here are today’s….
It had been so long since I painted traditionally so the first few I did were not very good…. I was rusty. These are a little better and hopefully tomorrow’s will be even better.
The human skull is a prop I bought at a shop in Burbank last year…. not real… the Deer is real though.>br> {edit} sorry the scan is bad

Comps for Labyrinth

Some of the comps for my re-imaging of Labyrinth… I’ll post the full pages later on in a week or so I have a bunch of pages of comps that I think I want to upload at once, but some of the scenes I’m still working on and I want to do a new set of comps for the abduction scene….
So the first row is the heads telling the protagonist she is going the wrong way, the second row is the abduction of her brother by the King, and finally the third row is the doors who tell the truth or lie.

Desert Witch

Third time trying to post this.... uck hopefully it doesn't look blurry this time....
Anyway this was an old sketch I quickly painted whild taking a break from a jungle painting. Too much green for too long... it was messing with my sanity.

Into the ruin

Another piece of my Labyrinth redesign personal project in the Amazon as El Dorado

Saturday, August 8, 2015

Amazon

Personal project work. Really just a painting to get a vibe of what I want to do/where I want to go sort of thing.
My project is redesigning the film Labyrinth set in the Amazon basin as an interpretation of the City of El Dorado. I’m having a lot of fun doing it. So more paints coming this week.

July 20: Floating landscape

July 20: Floating landscape
30 Day BG Challenge Day 20
Behind on posting things I had intended to, but I’m just so into my personal project I just am not interested in cleaning up or finishing then posting the things I did daily….

Lodge Comps

I stumbled upon this while going through my Art Folder for an older file so I figured I might as well upload it. These are some lodge ideations from last fall.

July 22: City Above the Sky

July 22: City Above the Sky
30 Day BG Challenge Day 22
This one is interchangeable with my floating landscape one…
So yeah I haven’t been posting my stuff daily. There’s a reason for this. The dailies have just become perspective exercises for me and are just line arts. So I will have a batch update with all of them sometime next week. Since I have been trying unsuccessfully to get into the industry for the past few years I know I’m not good enough, so I figured it would be more helpful to me to try to do perspective and good design than getting a paint out each day. Trying to get better at the important design stuff, ya know.
But yeah I have another one that is color that I will probably post on Monday to space posts out more evenly.

July 19: A Graveyard

July 19: A Graveyard
30 Day BG Challenge Day 19
Sloppy line-art again.... I’ve been looking back at a lot of my paintings this month and well they weren’t well designed or in correct perspective. No point in doing a painting that is poorly designed .... So for the rest of the month(and forever) I’m gonna be focusing more on those two aspects. In short there may be a lot of line arts for the rest of the month. I know they aren't the most exciting thing to look at, especially the way I sketch.... I’m in the group where you just sketch on it until you get it the way you want it and “who needs Cntl-Z or erase?”
But I actually think compositionly this is stronger than the two graveyards I did in May

July 16: Someplace You Would like to Live

A quiet apartment with just my dog…. maybe my cat… but otherwise alone….
This was a super quick piece that I lost interest in, but you can also tell part way through I wanted to change styles…..

July 14-15: A Museum and An Underwater scene

July 14-15: A Museum and An Underwater scene
30 Day BG Challenge 14 & 15
Why no paints you say? Well last night I was painting a museum when five minutes from completion my surge protector shorts out. When my computer restarts and I reopen the file I discover that the PSD is corrupted….. Which would be shitty if it was just one day’s paint, but it was my past week’s worth of paintings. So I lost seven paintings. I was pretty devastated because some I was going to go back and finish. But after I cried for a while I got back to work and the new composition for the museum is better than the one I had painted. Then comes today… Where every time I started to paint and about halfway through it happened again! No recovered file just one corrupted mess. So that’s why even today’s isn’t painted, it was just too frustrating. Enjoy so sloppy like art for today.
I do hope to get around to painting these two despite the current anger I feel towards the pieces…. Maybe they are cursed?
In the end lesson learned: don’t have multiple days worth of paintings in the same file, save incrementally, and get a decent damn surge protector. So tomorrow back to paintings as usual, at least I hope so. Right now though I’m going to do something other than Photoshop.

July 7: SciFi Scenery in a Desert

30 Day Background Challenge Day 6
This one deserves to be finished…. I need to add more junk and props…. less of them being dolls.

July 5: Cowboy landscape

July 5: Cowboy landscape
30 Day Background Challenge Day 5
Something super quick for today. I did a different sketch originally but I came to the realization that I wanted to mock-up the buildings in 3D and well I realized it would be a rather in-depth illustration… for another day.

July 3: “Uninhabited” Planet

July 3: “Uninhabited” Planet
30 Day Background Challenge Day 3
Eh…. Don’t really like this one. I had envisioned rock formations something more like Giant’s Causeway… This is too much me painting on autopilot and isn’t alien enough.. too terrestrial. Onto tomorrow’s and isolated swamp! Sounds fun.

July 2: A Witch’s Room

July 2: A Witch’s Room
Day 2 of 30 Day Background Challenge
I like this one but I want to go in and change a lot of the props. As you can see I didn’t finish yesterday…. I’ll work on this some more after I finish today’s paint and work on my portfolio some then I will repost this painting once I revise it….

July 1: Your Bedroom

July 1: Your Bedroom

I decided this evening to do another 30-Day Challenge sort of thing. So It’s the background challenge. So here is my bedroom/storage room…. And yes that bed is curved and uncomfortable, but it’s better than the hardwood floor I had been sleeping on for a year and a half until about six months ago….. So beggar’s can’t be choosy now can they.
I wish I hadn’t rushed the early part of the painting so much. The end result would have been much better.
Tomorrow’s topic(Wizards room) is gonna be more exciting.

My Uncle's Art

Something a little different today.
I’m posting some photos of my uncle’s art that he makes on the ground with his scooter wheelchair. My uncle was diagnosed with ALS last year. He is rapidly losing his ability to move and is now wheelchair-bound. But always the artist he has been making these large-scale paintings on the ground recently.

PS. Sorry about the photo-quality. They were taken with my mom’s iphone

Old paint, but I haven’t updated in a while…. My paintings lately have not been stuff I like at all… I’ve been floundering the past few days art-wise. So here is something old. I actually have a newer version of this but I can’t find it. It may have died with my 32gb usb that fell in water months ago….

Monday, June 15, 2015

Old line-art that I cleaned up (not much) this evening while waiting for the Bethesda conference to start on Twitch…. All I can say to them is “Shut up and take my caps!” I’m so damn excited for Fallout 4.
Anyway….. I did this last fall. The color version was a really bad attempt to photo-bash…. if I decide to recolor it I would do a much better job this time. But I don’t know….

Stylized Waterfall

An old experiment that I put some finishing touches on to make it quasi-finished this evening.
Based off a photo I took near Horseshoe Falls in Tahoe.

Keeper of the Keep

Something old from December that I forgot about. I didn’t ever finish the line-art…. Maybe I will go in and put candles on the mantle or something…. But I have gone in a different direction with my stuff and what I feel I should be spending my time doing art-wise that I feel this will be forever unfinished….

June 8. A Walk though the Old.

June 8. A Walk though the Old.
Redwoods are one of my favorite things in the world and I miss them deeply.
So yeah this is something old I decided to finish today. It was too hot in my house to work on my Cintiq today and the heat makes me insanely ill, so it was pretty late before I was able to paint today. I need to find my tablet so I can paint that way next time it’s this hot.
I’ll probably finish something old up tomorrow too….. I have a lot of half abandoned paintings….
